The 1990 Yamaha VMAX (VMX1200) is one of the most iconic muscle bikes ever built. It was designed for brutal straight-line acceleration, with a distinctive V4 engine and unmistakable styling.
Key specifications

Power: Approximately 145 hp (crank, unrestricted markets)
Torque: Around 112 Nm (83 lb-ft)
Transmission: 5-speed
Final drive: Shaft drive
Weight (wet): About 280 kg
Fuel tank: 15 litres
Seat height: 765 mm
Performance
0–60 mph: ~2.8–3.0 seconds
Quarter mile: Around 10.8–11.2 seconds
Top speed: Approximately 145–150 mph (233–241 km/h) depending on specification and conditions.
V-Boost
One of the VMAX’s defining features is V-Boost. Above roughly 6,000 rpm, servo-controlled butterfly valves begin opening between paired intake manifolds, allowing each cylinder to draw from two carburettors. By around 8,000 rpm, the system is fully open, producing a dramatic surge in power.
Things to know when buying one
Check the V-Boost system operates correctly.
Look for wear in the second gear (hard launches can damage the dogs).
Inspect the carburettors for leaks and balance.
Ensure the cooling system has been maintained.
Look for corrosion on the exhaust and shaft-drive components.
Suspension and brakes are dated by modern standards, though many bikes have upgraded components.
Collectability
A clean, original 1990 VMAX is becoming increasingly collectible,
1990 VMAX is a very different experience—less about lap times and more about effortless torque, character, and classic muscle-bike appeal.
